How do credits work?

The short answer: For standard manga and images, translating 1 image usually costs about 1 credit with the fast models. So 1 credit is roughly 1 image, and bringing your own key makes it cheaper still.

To keep pricing fair, your cost is based exactly on what you use. A translation is made up of two parts: Image Scanning (OCR) and the AI Translation.

Image & Manga Translation: 1 credit (for Image Scanning) + the AI translation cost based on text length.
Text-Only Translation: 0 scanning credits. You only pay the AI translation cost based on text length.
Visual Novel Translation:
- Using Cloud OCR: 1 credit (for Image Scanning) + the AI translation cost.
- Using Local OCR or Text Hooking: 0 scanning credits. Since you are providing the text, you only pay for the AI translation cost.

Tip on AI models: Fast models like Gemini Flash Lite and DeepSeek are incredibly efficient and usually add just a fraction of a credit to your cost. Premium models (like Claude Opus) provide deeper context and reasoning, but will use more credits per translation.

Tip on BYOK: If you bring your own key, it's cheaper still. You don't pay for the AI translation cost, only the scanning cost (if any).

Why do I need to log in with email or Google?

Login is necessary to prevent abuse of the free service and spam accounts. Torii can't handle thousands of free requests every second without user authentication.

Why can't I use a disposable email?

Disposable emails were used to farm the free credits, so they're blocked. That keeps the free credits available for real users.

Can I use Torii's API alone, without the extension?

Does translating the same image multiple times cost credits?

No, translations in Torii cost credits per unique [image-settings] combination, so if you haven't changed your settings, you just get back the translation you already requested the first time, without cost.

Torii auto-deletes cached results after 1 week (which you can change), meaning it will cost you credits again after the cached result is deleted. Torii stores the data on the device which you're using, so if you deleted cookies or cache for the page it will cost you credits again.
